Law Enforcement

[ADM 35.34 and 35.92]

Campus Security.  Campus security is provided through police services.

Police Services.  Police services are provided by the Moscow Police Department (MPD) under a contract between UI and the city.  The MPD enforces applicable laws and ordinances on the campus, and includes jurisdiction over streets, alleys, and other public areas.  The MPD interacts with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Police are responsible for law enforcement on the campus and all actual or suspected violations of law should be reported to police.  Violations of, or questions regarding, university policy or failure to comply with procedures should be reported to the responsible administrator, or to UI Auditing Services at (208) 885-7087 or to Risk Management Office at (208) 885-7177.  Violations, or suspected violations of, the Student Code of Conduct should be reported to the dean of students at (208) 885-6757.

Getting Help on Campus

The contract with the city of Moscow for police services provides for the services of twelve (12) FTE officers.  When spread over 24 hours a day, 365 days a year this staffing level generally allows one or two officers to be on the campus or in adjacent areas of the city at all times, although variations will occur.  There is a Moscow Police Substation on the UI campus, located at 3rd and Line Streets; the campus division commander maintains office hours at that location during regular business hours.

The university expects employees, in conjunction with assuming personal responsibility for safety and security of the community, to report crimes or suspicious activity to the Moscow Police Department promptly so that police officers and university officials have the opportunity to successfully investigate.

Fraternities and sororities are located in the City of Moscow and receive police services from the Moscow Police Department.

Basic 911 telephone service provides direct access to Moscow Police dispatchers for reporting emergencies.  Moscow 911 service is equipped to receive incoming calls from text telephones.  Other emergency telephone numbers are listed on the inside front cover of this booklet as well as in the Campus Directory on page one by type of emergency or service needed and appear on stickers or placards on many campus telephones.
