Candida Gillis

Professor of English, has taught at UI since 1987. She has taught a variety of courses mostly focused on teacher preparation in writing and literature. She is the author of numerous articles and two books for English teachers, The Community as Classroom and Writing Outside the Lines. A strong theme in her research is how English education can be improved by establishing school/community partnerships. She is the recipient of University’s Teaching Excellence Award, two Alumni Awards for Teaching Excellence, and the Burlington Northern Achievement Award. Her deepest play is at her cabin in the Sierras, and in the pool, lap 23.

Debbie Storrs

Associate Professor of Sociology, is a recipient of the UI Teaching Excellence Award, the Virginia Wolf Distinguished Service Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award for a commitment to teaching, service and diversity. Her research focuses on rural health care, issues related to the working poor and other topics. She is the author of various publications, including Making a Difference: University Students of Color Speak Out, “Imagining a Liberal Education: Critically Examining the Learning Process Through Simulation,” and “Like a Bamboo: Representations of a Japanese War Bride.” She enjoys playing with her dogs, Fancy and Mad Max, and is in her deepest play when throwing dice or flipping cards.
