When working with an ombuds, concerns are most often addressed through collaborative problem solving approaches.  Using collaborative problem solving

  • The focus remains on the important issues and real problems get addressed. Clarifying the problem, focusing on the important issues, and identifying each party's interests gets to the heart of a conflict.

  • Quality solutions are identified. Solutions that you and the other parties involved identify, create, and select lead to more satisfactory solutions, a greater commitment to follow through, and in general, more durable agreements.

  • Workplace relationships are more likely to remain intact. You will work on the problem--not against another person. There is no need for "taking sides."

  • You can return your attention to your job. Unresolved or poorly managed conflict can become a distraction and consume considerable personal energy. Knowing you can address problems constructively--and that help is available--allows you and your coworkers to focus on your work.
