Vote and Get Involved!

If running for an executive board position is not for you, the ISC would like to invite you to vote in the elections, and get involved in the general meetings, projects, and be a part of other fun and exciting events throughout the year.

What is the International Student Council?
International Programs created the International Student Council (ISC) last year to replace what had become an inactive Students International Association (SIA). The ISC is a new and dynamic group made up of international and U.S. students.  It acts as a representative body and a unified voice for international student groups, and other student groups who care about infusing international interests into the UI campus environment, curriculum, and policies.  The idea is to create real change on the UI campus!

To do this, in the past year the ISC developed different projects and events such as the Cultural Quotient, the “International Wall,” and Coffee Hour, all of which aimed to motivate discussion and invite student participation. The Cultural Quotient, published quarterly in the Argonaut, designates a forum for students to submit articles relating to international and cultural affairs. The ISC also organized the “International Wall” which was an open art exhibit in which students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to give their own perspectives on the world. Finally, the ISC developed a Coffee Hour where students informally could meet, sip a cup of Joe, partake in some baked goods, discuss an issue, or just visit with one another.

What is the International Student Council Executive Board?
Anyone can be involved in International Student Council events and meetings.  The Executive Board plans and coordinates them and acts as a representative body for the ISC to ASUI and UNITY.   The Executive Board is made up of 10 positions, half are international students, and half are U.S. students.  In order to encourage representation from all student groups, one position should be held by a representative from ASUI, and one from the Student Bar Association (SBA).

And just in case running for an executive board position is not for you, the ISC would like to invite you to vote in the elections, and get involved in the general meetings, projects, and be a part of other fun and exciting events throughout the year.  If you would like to be added to the ISC email list, please email isc@uidaho.edu.

Current Projects and Activities

International Center for Students
The ISC feels that it is important to have an international meeting place on campus (an International Center). This center would be a place for all students. It would offer a place for international programming and the collaboration of different groups. It would also provide a place for educational programs (like movies, speakers, and discussions about global issues), social gatherings, hanging out and studying, cultural and foreign language events, and could become a resource center for students who would like to study abroad or who want to practice their English.

Currently there is no gathering place specifically set aside for these purposes. Other universities, like WSU and Oregon State University, who have international centers, have been able to increase their international programming and group collaboration which has helped to make change on their campuses. If you, or a group you are a part of, supports the idea of the creation of an International Center, please sign the ISC petition which can be found in International Programs or at any of our meetings.  We'll also have the petition available at Cruise the World.

Cruise the World
Come visit our booth at Cruise the World and learn more about the ISC while enjoying the information, food, entertainment, and people from around the world.  Saturday, March 1st from 11:00am - 5:00pm in the SUB Ballroom.

  Name:  Natalie Evans
Standing:  Exchange
Status: International (Isle of Man)
Major(s): Music & Business

Why are you interested in being on the ISC Executive Board?

I am interested in becoming part of the ISC Executive Board as I am from the Isle of Man and I have recently completed a degree in Music at Manchester University. I would like to help the students at the University of Idaho. I am also interested in Project Management and Leadership.

What do you hope to offer to the ISC? List any pertinent experience, ideas, etc.
I completed a 3 month leadership programme at Manchester University. I am also Vice President for my hall (Global Village LLC) This is an international hall and I have previous experience of living with international students. I have noticed differences in British and American culture and I’m sure my knowledge could benefit the Board.

How would you describe your communication and teamwork skills?
I have done many team projects in my courses, drama and project management for example. I also won a prize for best presentation in a business competition last year. I am in Vandal Solutions which is a team and I have to communicate with clients and students.

What do you hope to gain from being elected to the ISC executive board?
I hope to learn more about other people’s cultures. Give something back to the University of Idaho. Meet new people and make a difference in the community.

  Name:  Daniel Julien
Standing:  Undergraduate
Status: U.S.
Major(s): Biology & Psychology

Why are you interested in being on the ISC Executive Board?
I am interested in becoming a member of the ISC Executive Board because I believe that it will allow me to aid in the promotion of cultural diversity and interaction between international and U.S. students on the University of Idaho campus.

What do you hope to offer to the ISC? List any pertinent experience, ideas, etc.
Through my job and several of my college classes I have had the opportunity to become acquainted with many exceptional international students and scholars. I believe that those interactions have enhanced my appreciation and understanding of other cultures. I would therefore like to help in the organization of events that would promote interaction between U.S. and international students at the University of Idaho.

How would you describe your communication and teamwork skills?
I would describe myself as a good communicator and a team player. I have had many opportunities in the past to hone my communication and teamwork sills while holding positions in several student organizations. Currently, my job as an undergraduate molecular biology researcher requires me to constantly communicate and work together with other researchers to solve a problem. Also, as a volunteer at Gritman Medical Center's Cancer Resource Center, it is my job to communicate with cancer patients and cancer caregivers about the resources that are available to them so that they may make informed decisions about things like their treatment options.

What do you hope to gain from being elected to the ISC executive board?
In general, I hope to interact more with international students and gain an insight into how the International Students Council functions on the University of Idaho Campus
