Location:

Quito, Ecuador
Eligibility:                             2.5 GPA, to take courses with Ecuadorian students: at least 6 semesters or the equivalent of college-level Spanish
Language of Instruction: Spanish/English
 
Academic Program:
  • The Ecuadorian Experience - Social & Global Responsibility Service-Learning courses:
    All students will take this 3-credit course taught by the University of Idaho Resident Director, Jose Yanez.  This course includes a week-long trip (usually to the Ecuadorian Amazon) where students will complete a service project.
     
  • Spanish Language and Ecuadorian Culture Program:
    7 levels of the Spanish language and culture program are offered (9 credits each).  Students usually complete 2 levels per semester.
     
  • Regular university courses with Ecuadorian students in the following areas:
    Architecture • Design • Business Administration • Accounting • Preschool Education • Elementary Education • Secondary Education • Biological Sciences • Anthropology •  Geography • Ecology and Tourism • History • Economics • Nursing • Medical Technology • Theology • Philosophy • Religious Sciences • Civil Engineering • Systems Engineering • Jurisprudence • Linguistics and Languages • Psychology • Social Work
     
  • Open Courses can be taken with the Spanish Language Program (Level IV and above only) or Regular university courses.  Courses available in the following areas:
    Studies of the Americas • Asian History • Social and Cultural History • Culture and Society • Social Development • Gender and Development • Ecology and Environmental Management • Politics, International Relations and Conflict Resolution
Special Program Features:
  • Global Justice Service-Learning course and week-long trip.
     
  • Students may opt to travel to the Galapagos Islands, made famous by Darwin’s Origin of the Species, and considered to be one of the world’s most unique and interesting ecosystems. Trips to the Galapagos usually last 5-7 days and cost around $1,000.
     
  • Other volunteer and internship opportunities

  • The official program ends at the semester end date each semester.  Those students wishing to stay with their host families after this date will be responsible for their room & meal charges.  Students staying for the academic year will only be responsible for these charges after the spring program end date.
     
  • The Open Courses have a special fee of $55 - $80/course.  These fees are not covered under the PUCE program fee. 
     
  • In addition to the program fee, students will pay a $150 non-refundable application fee when they apply.
