About Uruguay

Uruguay is a small country, located in South America. The country is known for its scenic vistas and is a must-visit for beach lovers. The long coastline of Uruguay ensures that it has a steady stretch of fine beaches, providing some of the most exquisite scenes to visitors. The country shares its borders with Argentina and Brazil. The capital of Uruguay is Montevideo and is an important trading and commercial center. People here love finer aspects of life and often indulge in theatre, ballet and symphonic concerts. Uruguay used to be South America’s best-kept secret, with a handful of Argentines, Brazilians, Chileans and non–South Americans in the know popping in to enjoy the pristine beaches, the atmospheric cities, the huge steaks and the happening nightlife. The official currency of Uruguay is the Uruguayan Peso (UYU), but US Dollars are also accepted by some tourist businesses, retailers and taxi drivers. The peso is divided into 100 centécimos. Currency can be exchanged at banks and Money Exchange Shops, which both offer similar exchange rates. Exchange rates tend to fluctuate frequently. There are plenty of ATMs available in shopping centers and attached to banks in commercial areas, but not all cards are accepted. Credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club, are widely accepted by shops and restaurants. Travelers checks are easiest to exchange if in US Dollars.
