Now that you’re back, and beginning to get into the
day-to-day happenings on campus, you want to make use of what you learned as
a study abroad student. There are a number of ways to do that on the
UI campus:
International Student Council (ISC)
The ISC is an ASUI registered student group whose members include both international students as
well as U.S. students. The ISC's purpose is to promote friendship, unity,
education, and intercultural understanding within the University and Moscow
community. The Association works to build an international community and
improve the welfare of its groups and individuals. The Association also
gives voice to the concerns and interests of international students at UI.
The ISC welcomes U.S. students to join
and enjoy making friends from around the world. Participation of U.S.
students helps to bring U.S. and Idaho culture to the Association through
various events planned throughout the semester.
Conversation Partner Program
Conversation Partners is a program in which
international students and U.S. students meet for each week to talk, learn
about other cultures, make new friends and practice English.
Conversation partners are expected to meet together for 1 to 2 hours a week.
The time and location of meetings is determined by the conversation partners
themselves. Students are expected to meet in public places, like coffee
shops or restaurants. Participants may receive community service credit by
keeping track of their hours through the
ASUI Volunteer Programs.
For more information, please contact the American Language and Culture
Program(ALCP) at 885-4599.
International Friendship Association (IFA)
IFA is a collaborative program of the Associated Students of the University
of Idaho (ASUI) and the International Programs Office (IPO) to promote
interaction between international students, visiting scholars, UI students,
and the community. Through a variety of activities such as Conversation
Partners, Friendship Families, and the International Women’s Association,
IFA endeavors to create more awareness and interaction between persons from
different cultures. IFA is always looking for volunteers to help with
cultural programs, the Bike Loan Program, and other activities. For more
information call Glen Kauffman, IFA Coordinator,
by email or by telephone at (208) 885-7841.
Global Village
Global Village is a co-ed international
residence community where U.S. students and international students at the UI
live together. Global Village is located in the Living Learning Community (LLC),
building number three. It is among the newest and most desirable
dormitories on campus. Global Village provides a unique environment on
campus to promote diversity and encourage the interaction between
international and U.S. students. Each semester, the residents of Global
Village hold many international events in which they participate, offering a
chance to socialize with students from other countries and to brush up on
rusty foreign language skills. Contact
University Residences at 885-6571
for more information.
The Study Abroad Fair
Bi-annually at the beginning of September and the end of January, the
Study Abroad Office hosts a number of Study Abroad program representatives
for recruitment of students. Returned study abroad students are
invited to work in shifts at the table in order to answer questions and give
information about the various programs and universities where they studied.
If you would be interested in doing this, please contact the Study Abroad
Office at (208) 885-7870 early in the fall/spring semester.
International
Speaker’s Bureau
You can show slides, give a mini language lesson, or even demonstrate a
custom of the culture you experienced abroad through participation in the
International Speaker’s Bureau, which is coordinated by the International
Programs Office (IPO). IPO frequently receives requests from schools and
community groups for speakers who can talk about particular countries or
cultures. This provides a great opportunity for you to share your
experiences and insights as well as use the language.
For more information call Glen Kauffman, IFA Coordinator,
by email or by telephone at (208) 885-7841.
Model United Nations
The
Martin Institute
organizes students from the UI and WSU to participate in a Model U.N. conference.
Students interested in this program must register for the appropriate
credits for the Fall. Enrollment is limited. Students will learn about the
structure and organization of the U.N. In the spring, a group will be
selected to travel to New York and participate in a Model U.N. conference.
For more information, please contact the Martin Institute.
Global Languages United
This club was created to focus on
learning languages outside of the classroom and to create international
connections. The club meets regularly and is an active participant in
international activities, and club creators hope to also plan an
international service trip. Languages available: English, German, Spanish,
French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and many more to come. For more
information, call
IPO at 885-8984.
Non-UI Students
Non-UI
students should look into similar opportunities at their home university.
