On-Campus International Clubs and Organizations

Now that you’re back, and beginning to get into the day-to-day happenings on campus, you want to make use of what you learned as a study abroad student.  There are a number of ways to do that on the UI campus:

International Speaker’s Bureau
You can show slides, give a mini language lesson, or even demonstrate a custom of the culture you experienced abroad through participation in the International Speaker’s Bureau, which is coordinated by the International Programs Office (IPO).  IPO frequently receives requests from schools and community groups for speakers who can talk about particular countries or cultures.  This provides a great opportunity for you to share your experiences and insights as well as use the language.  Contact IPO at 885-8984.

International Friendship Association (IFA)
IFA is a collaborative program of the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI) and the International Programs Office (IPO) to promote interaction between international students, visiting scholars, UI students, and the community.  Through a variety of activities such as Conversation Partners, Friendship Families, and the International Women’s Association, IFA endeavors to create more awareness and interaction between persons from different cultures.  IFA is always looking for volunteers to help with cultural programs, the Bike Loan Program, and other activities.  For more information call Glen Kauffman, IFA Coordinator, by email or by telephone at (208) 885-7841.

Students’ International Association (SIA)
SIA is an ASUI registered student group that was founded in 1992 and whose members include both international students as well as U.S. students.  SIA’s purpose is to promote friendship, unity, education, and intercultural understanding within the University and Moscow community.  The Association works to build an international community and improve the welfare of its groups and individuals.  The Association also gives voice to the concerns and interests of international students at UI.

SIA welcomes U.S. students to join SIA and enjoy making friends from around the world.  Participation of U.S. students helps to bring U.S. and Idaho culture to the Association through events such as rafting the Salmon River or playing softball.

The Study Abroad Fair
Bi-annually at the beginning of September and the end of January, the Study Abroad Office hosts a number of Study Abroad program representatives for recruitment of students.  Returned study abroad students are invited to work in shifts at the table in order to answer questions and give information about the various programs and universities where they studied.  If you would be interested in doing this, please contact the Study Abroad Office at (208) 885-4075 early in the fall/spring semester.

Global Village
Global Village is a co-ed international hall where U.S. students and international students at the UI live together.  This hall, starting fall 2004, will be located in the new Living Learning Community (LLC), the newest and most desirable dormitory on campus.  Global Village provides a unique environment on campus to promote diversity and encourage the interaction between international and U.S. students.  Each semester, the residents of Global Village hold many international events in which they participate, offering a chance to socialize with students from other countries and to brush up on rusty foreign language skills.  Contact University Residences at 885-6571 for more information.

Model United Nations
The Martin Institute organizes students from the UI and WSU to participate in a Model U.N.  Students interested in this program must register for the appropriate credits for the fall.  Enrollment is limited.  Students will learn about the structure and organization of the U.N.  In the spring, a group will be selected to travel to New York and participate in a Model U.N.  For more information, call Sharon Scott at 885-6527.

Global Languages United
This club was created to focus on learning languages outside of the classroom and to create international connections.  The club meets regularly and is an active participant in international activities, and club creators hope to also plan an international service trip.  Languages available:  English, German, Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and many more to come.  For more information, call 892-9268 or e-mail
pete5808@uidaho.edu.

Non-UI Students
Non-UI students should look into similar opportunities at their home university.
