Program Description

The University of Idaho American Language & Culture Program (ALCP) is an intensive language program designed to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in academic programs in the United States or to further their professional careers. Since its beginning in 1992, the ALCP has helped hundreds of students improve their English language abilities.

The ALCP offers 21 hours per week of in-class instruction. Students may begin an eight-week course of study in January, March, June, August, or October. The ALCP also provides short-term contract programs for groups of students or professionals.

 Highlights of our current program:

  • No TOEFL required for ALCP graduates to attend the University of Idaho undergraduate programs

  • 6 levels of instruction, from basic to advanced

  • Earn university undergraduate credit through concurrent enrollment with the ALCP

  •   Integrated program with emphasis on academic preparation in the four skills

  • Small classes with fewer than 15 students

  • TOEFL preparation course intended to help students improve their test taking skills

  •  Afternoon Pronunciation class that provides instruction to improve students’ pronunciation and their language use in conversational contexts.

  •  Deferred Admission status granted to ALCP students—easier to get a student Visa

  •  Conversation Partner Program designed to provide opportunities for cultural exchange with American students and to improve their conversational English skills.

  •  International student advising to help students apply to degree programs at the University of Idaho, maintain immigration status, and adjust to campus life.

  •  Frequent excursions and activities designed to expose students to the regional geography and American culture.

 ALCP Courses:

Students are placed into one of 6 proficiency levels based on the results of the ALCP English Placement test. ALCP students take different classes depending on their level of English proficiency. All instructors use a communicative, interactive pedagogical approach in their classes.

Levels 1-3: These levels focus on basic language acquisition using texts that align themselves to the course performance objectives at each level.

Levels 4-6: These levels are taught through content-based instruction with a focus on English for Academic Preparation (EAP). Levels 4-6 are tied to a course in the CORE undergraduate program at the University of Idaho. For example, the CORE course with which we will coordinate for Spring I and Spring II Core Sociology/Anthropology 301: Introduction to Diversity and Stratification.  The novel class is thematically related to the CORE class.

All students are required to take 18 hours of core courses.

All students are required to take at least one elective, but may choose to take two.
