The city of
McCammon
, located within the
Portneuf
Valley
, derives domestic water from a combination of a well and spring (Figure
1). These two sources serve approximately 800 people. The spring is the
primary source of water while the well serves as a backup when
additional water is required. The city’s two wells, one currently used
and the other abandoned, derived water from a gravel aquifer.

During summer months, city
officials use a well to supplement water to the city since the spring
does not provide adequate volumes needed. Several summers ago the city
had to use the well for prolonged periods of time. When the city needed
additional water the next summer, the well began pumping water and sand.
The city decided to drill a new well to resolve this problem in 2000.
Recently the new well, called the
Bennington
well, began pumping water and sand.
This
project provides hydrogeologic information regarding ground water
development to the city of
McCammon
. Objectives for providing information to the city for future planning
are:
-
Determine why the
well(s) pump sand.
-
Provide possible
solutions to prevent sand from entering the well.
-
Find a better
producing aquifer.
