ASHTON EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Ashton, a community of approximately 1200 people, is located in Fremont County south of the Targhee National Forest (Figure 1). In recent years, the city’s domestic water supply, derived from two wells, contains elevated nitrate concentrations. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ) contacted the Idaho Water Resources Research Institute Rural Community Water Project team to assist in providing hydrogeologic information important to the future water supply of the city.

The team plans on obtaining water quality data from the IDEQ and well log data from the Idaho Department of Water Resources. With the well log data, the team intends to create a ground water flow direction map of the aquifer system and a map of the surface sediments overlying the basalt aquifer. The latter map in conjunction with the water quality data will be used for determining any relationship between soil depth and nitrate concentrations in the ground water. In addition the team will investigate any temporal relationships between nitrate concentration and precipitation and/or fertilizer application.
