Workshop Topics
Each participant will be able to attend two workshops

TRACK ONE:  FAMILIES AS AGENTS OF CHANGE

Hosted by:  Anna Boluda

In a culture where the stereotyped definition of “family” has changed dramatically, many different kinds of families have become politicized. When we redefine “family” to include (among many more) multi-racial and multi-ethnic, cross-religion, disabilities inclusive, grandparents as parents, divorced and blended, alternative life-style and

spirituality, trans-nationally adoptive, GLBT, single parent, and foster parenting, we transform both our understanding and our community. Documentary film maker Anna Boluda will facilitate an open discussion about how families and others can create a space for documenting and celebrating this transformation through resources available within our own community.

TRACK TWO:  SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Hosted by Balbir Mathur

In this track Balbir and Treva Mathur will share the inspirational story of "Trees for Life".  They will share the origins of their commitment and describe what motivated them to undertake this project.  The impact of "Trees for Life" has been phenomenal and has allowed Balbir and Treva to learn about social economics at a grass roots level, and how business with conscious can be

tremendously rewarding and successful.  Social entrepreneurship employs innovative methods to maximize social value, and redefines "wealth" to include the application of moral and ethical practices.  Balbir and Treva will help translate "values" into "tools" and will share themes and insights to inspire others to engaged in this transformational work.

TRACK THREEEDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN

Hosted by Dr. Randie Gottlieb

In this track, Dr. Gottlieb will share the story of the Mona Foundation in raising the status of women and girls worldwide, highlighting one amazing initiative on the native Ngobe-Bugle homeland in rural Panama. She will examine society’s view of women, both past and present, describe the impact

of educating girls, and consider the social transformation that is possible when women and men, like the two wings of a bird, achieve full partnership.  Her workshop will focus on the role of women and world peace.

TRACK FOUR: COMMON COMMUNITY

Hosted by Reverend John L. Selders Jr.

Reverend Selder is a long-time activist on issues both in Connecticut and nationally.    His own compelling story of leadership in his own faith community advocating for the social justice on issues as diverse as race, anti-racism, internalized oppression and HIV and LGBT issues (naming those issues as an essential part of a social justice agenda)  and the application of his understanding on his life and his congregation provide insights which have allowed Reverend Selders to create a unique model of community building for support of social justice supporting diversity and human rights across a broad spectrum.  In this track Reverend Selders will share his model of community building for social justice in support of human rights with the insight of several examples.
