CHAPTER FOUR: 4920 ACADEMIC POLICIES AND REGULATIONS July 1996 4920 AWARDING DOCTORAL DEGREES TO MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY PREAMBLE: This section, original to the 1979 Handbook and unchanged since, outlines UI policy with regard to the awarding of doctoral degrees to its own faculty members. For further information, contact the Provost's Office (208-885-6448).
A. It is an academic policy that a UI faculty member with rank of senior instructor or above may not be awarded a doctoral degree earned through the department or corresponding unit in which he or she is employed, unless the faculty member had been advanced to candidacy for the degree before attaining such rank. B. This policy has been interpreted to prohibit the advancement of a faculty member with rank of senior instructor or above to candidacy for a doctoral degree to be earned through the department or corresponding unit in which he or she is employed. Alternatively, it prohibits the retention on the faculty of such a person who is advanced to candidacy for such a degree.
