CHAPTER ONE: 1900 HISTORY, MISSION, GENERAL ORGANIZATION, AND GOVERNANCE July 1996 1900
COMMUNICATION WITH THE REGENTS AND THE BOARD'S OFFICE
PREAMBLE: This section first appeared in the 1979 Handbook and has remained unchanged. For further information, contact the President's Office (208-885-6365).
The president is UI's official voice and the general agent through whom members of the university community--faculty, staff, and students--normally address communications to the Board of Regents. These presidential functions are established in custom and in faculty and board policies. It is, therefore, regular operating procedure for communications to the Board of Regents and the Office of the State Board of Education that originate within UI to be routed through administrative channels to the president, unless either the president or the board has otherwise directed or unless some highly unusual circumstance impels a person or group to exercise the right to make a direct approach to the regents. When a direct approach seems warranted, it is expected that the person or group making the approach will inform the president and other appropriate administrators of the substance of the communication and of any subsequent developments.
