Introduction

This certificate is designed for working professionals, statewide, nationally, and internationally, and provides background and depth in the concepts and tools currently used in assessing environmental contamination. The environmental contaminant assessment certificate will lead to a significant depth of knowledge in environmental toxicology, risk assessment, environmental sampling design/data analysis and reporting.

This certificate is consistent with an M.S. in Environmental Science, the largest interdisciplinary program at the University of Idaho. With graduate committee approval, graduate students may include the certificate courses as part of their study plan. Non-degree students can enhance their knowledge in this area without seeking a graduate degree, and simultaneously build a strong foundation for a master's degree at a future date.

Prior to starting work on a certificate, students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field from an accredited institution. Course credits earned as an undergraduate student may not be applied toward a certificate. Contact Chris Dixon for course alternatives if you successfully completed any of the required courses as part of your undergraduate degree program.

Course Selection

The Environmental Contamination Assessment Certificate consists of 12 credits. The 500-level (graduate) courses may require additional prerequisites or permission from the instructor prior to registration. Refer to the University of Idaho General Catalog at http://www.uidaho.edu/catalog for course descriptions and prerequisite requirements. Students must earn a grade of "B" or better in each class to qualify for a certificate. If you are considering this certificate, you must contact the coordinator prior to registration. The certificate requires the following three courses offered on campus and over the Internet:

One additional technical elective course (3 credits), approved by the Director of the Environmental Science Program, can be taken live at the UI, on-line, through Engineering Outreach, or through Independent Study.

Admission

Q: I'm a University of Idaho student, how do I apply?

A: Students working toward the certificate must be admitted to the University of Idaho as either a non-degree seeking student or as an environmental science graduate student (refer to the University of Idaho General Catalog for details). The minimum GPA admissions requirement is 2.8 to enroll in 500 or higher level courses for a certificate. Consideration will be given for provisional enrollment to students who do not meet the minimum requirements.

Up to 12 approved credits taken as a non-degree student may be transferred into the Environmental Science graduate program. Although the courses listed above are routinely included in the graduate curricula for environmental science, students considering transferring credits into the graduate program must contact the Environmental Science Program for early advising.

Non-Degree Seeking Application

Q:  What if I am not a student at the University of Idaho?

A: These courses can be taken completely over the Web. If you are taking this course to fulfill or supplement curriculum requirements at your home university we can work with your institution to transfer credits. Working professionals or part-time students can register as a non-degree seeking student (no additional charges: go to the Non-Degree Application for the undergraduate or graduate level course).
