Module 1: Introduction to the Course

Resources

Website Help page
1.1
Introduction to EnvS 428
1.2 Introduction to Pollution Prevention
1.3 Definitions and Regulatory Framework
1.4 The Pollution Prevention Cycle

Lesson Description

First, we need to get comfortable with the structure of the course, with the software we will be using (Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, and Blackboard) and with web based learning in general.

Explore the course website, download the software from the Help page, and make sure you can hear and see the Modules.

This Module also begins the introduction to the concepts of sustainability and pollution prevention. We first review the definitions of these terms and look at the current regulatory structure in the U.S.  We then review the basic pollution prevention cycle of reduce, reuse, recycle, treat and dispose. Review Modules 1.1 through 1.4.

In addition, this is the time to test your ability to get into the Blackboard Secure Tools. For this you need to know your UI computer account and password. I'll help you with this if you don't know it. When you get access, post to the discussion questions that are there so that we can all become acquainted and so that I know that you can access the Discussion Board.

Finally, order the textbooks.

Exercise

Go to http://www.footprintnetwork.org/en/index.php/GFN/page/calculators/
and calculate your ecological footprint. Notice what they ask. Why do you think they ask for the country you live in? This is a simple and fun exercise, there are many that are much more complex. If you were to build onto this, what would you add? Report your results in the threaded discussion and reflect on what you learned.
