Research Experiences for Undergraduates

2002 Activities

wpe1D.jpg (199689 bytes)Students participated in a full schedule of events including four weekend field trips, weekly career development luncheons, role model dinners, weekly research meetings, environmental ethics workshops and a final REU research conference.

REU field trips allowed students to see points of interest in Idaho. Students went to the Coeur d'Alene Powwow, to Clarkia fossil beds, rafting on the Salmon River, and did a team building event.

Ethics Component
REU students attended 2 ethics lectures by Dr. Doug Lind, Philosophy and Dr. Steve Austad, Biological Sciences that focused on case studies and the ethic problems they posed.

The REU pizza lunches were designed as career development discussions:
Remy Newcombe, Ph.D. candidate, Civil Engineering, Women in Engineering
▪Jeannie Harvey, Director of the UI Women’s Center, Role of Voluntary Service in Career Development.
▪Dr. Terry Armstrong, College of Education, The Brain.
▪Mary Furnari, International Programs Office, International Experiences
▪Americorp Crew met with REU participants to share their experiences working of Paradise Creek restoration project.
▪Valerie Roberts, College of Graduate Studies, Orientation to Graduate School.
▪Dr. Dan Edwards, Chemistry Department, Scientists and Philosophy

Four role model dinners were held in order to expose REU participants to outstanding people with varied backgrounds and experiences.
▪Holly Wichman, Biology Department, discussed role of mentoring
▪Pam Shapiro, Chemistry Department, attended a Sigma Zi lecture by Dr, Krim, University of North Carolina, with students and met for dinner after to discuss lecture.
Raul Sanchez, Special Assistant to the President, Office of Diversity and Human Rights.
▪Simba Tirima, EnvS instructor and Ph.D. candidate from Kenya.

REU participants attended Research Meetings every Friday during the REU Program. REU faculty advisors gave overviews of their research and some REU participants explained their role in the research.

Research Conference

REU participants presented their research at a day long REU Research Conference on August 2, 2002. Students gave a 20 minute long Power Point presentation and fielded questions about their research. There was an awards luncheon following the presentations.
