Research Experiences for Undergraduates

2001 Activities

Students participated in a full schedule of events including four weekend field trips, weekly career development pizza lunches, role model dinners, weekly research meetings, environmental ethics workshops and a final REU research conference.

Field Trips
REU raft tripREU field trips allowed students to see points of interest in Idaho.  Students went to the Coeur d'Alene Powwow, to Clarkia fossil beds, rafting on the Salmon River, and did a GOALS team building event.  The 2001 REU participants were especially adventurous and planned trips for themselves as far away as Glacier National Park.

The REU pizza lunches were designed as career development discussions:
▪Dr. Margrit von Braun led a discussion on women and minorities in science and engineering.
▪Jeannie Harvey, Director of the UI Women’s Center, discussed the role that voluntary service can play in career development.
▪Dr. Terry Armstrong presented his research on the brain.
▪Dr. Ron Crawford discussed his proposal for studying microbiology on mars and the resulting design projects.
▪Americorp Crew met with REU participants to share their experiences working of Paradise Creek restoration project.
▪Dr. Roger Wallins, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, gave an orientation to graduate school.
▪Dean Thompson, College of Engineering, presented his interdisciplinary perspective of hand biomechanics research.

Four role model dinners were held in order to expose REU participants to outstanding people with varied backgrounds and experiences.
▪Carlos Schwantes, professor of history and author of several books.
▪Raul Sanchez, Special Assistant to the President, Office of Diversity and Human Rights.
▪Simba Tirima, EnvS instructor and Ph.D. candidate from Kenya.
▪Deena Lilya and Cheryl Gussenhoff, women in engineering.

REU participants attended Research Meetings every Friday during the REU Program. REU faculty advisors gave overviews of their research and some REU participants explained their role in the research.
