Reserve Forces Duty Scholarship
Two-year Reserve Forces Duty
Scholarships are awarded to the most outstanding applicants. If you are a
student or a Reservist who has successfully completed two years of college,
you may be eligible for a two-year Reserve Forces Duty Scholarship. In
addition to the awarded scholarship, each winner receives a flat rate of
$600 annually for books, supplies and equipment, as well as a tax free
stipend. If you receive a scholarship and you are an
out-of-state student, your out of state tuition will be covered. There are
three types of Reserve Forces Duty Scholarships. In all of these, after
commissioning, the officer is required to attend an Officer Basic Course in
an Active Duty Status.
1. Guaranteed Reserve
Forces Duty - US Army Reserve
Applicants should be
members of the U.S. Army Reserve. Individuals desiring a Guaranteed
Reserve Forces Duty scholarship who do not belong to an US Army Reserve
unit must have a letter of acceptance from a US Army Reserve troop unit
stating that they will accept the individual in the
Simultaneous
Membership Program
(SMP)
. At the University of Idaho we help you find a unit to meet this
requirement.
2. Guaranteed
Reserve Forces Duty - Army National Guard
Applicants should be
members of the US Army National Guard. Individuals desiring a Guaranteed
Reserve Forces Duty scholarship who do not belong to the U.S. Army
National Guard must have a letter of acceptance from a U.S. Army National
Guard unit stating that they will accept the individual in a
SMP
status. At the University of Idaho we help you find a unit to meet this
requirement.
3. Dedicated
Army National Guard
Applicants should be
members of the U.S. Army National Guard. The applicant must serve 8 years
in the Army National Guard except for the period(s) of active duty
required to be branch qualified or mobilization. This scholarship can be
either a two or four year scholarship.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for any of the above scholarships you
must be:
U.S. Citizen
1. 17 years of age
before the scholarship is effective
2. medically qualified
for enrollment in the ROTC scholarship program
3. a participant in
leadership, extra curricular and athletic activities
4. under 25 on June 30
of the year you expect to graduate from college
(qualifying veterans may be granted an age extension of up to seven years)
5. enrolled in or
accepted for enrollment as a full-time academic junior in a major
course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree
6. willing to pursue an
Army approved academic major
Obligation
As a winner of a
two-year Reserve Forces Duty scholarship, you're required to take ROTC
classes and join the
Simultaneous Membership Program
(SMP). Upon graduation, you have an
obligation to accept a commission, serve on active duty for a 3 to 6 month
duration in order to complete Officer Basic Course training, and serve in
the Army National Guard or the U.S. Army Reserve for a period of eight
years.
When to Apply
Applications are available
December through February. Your application must be completed and received
by Headquarters, Cadet Command by 15 March. Winners are notified during the
month of June.
